An earthquake hit the coast of Japan late last night/early this morning. News sources indicate the earthquake measured between 8.8 and 8.9 in magnitude. This sent tsunami waves rippling across the Pacific Ocean.
Initially tsunami warnings were issued for many countries throughout SE Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. Soon after, those warnings were lifted in SE Asia and Oceania.
Tsunami warnings are still in effect across North, Central, and South America. Currently there are World Race and Real Life teams in Nicaragua and Peru. Waves are expected to hit the coast of Nicaragua and Peru between 6-8 p.m. EST. Based on waves that hit Hawaii early this morning, those waves reaching Central and South America are expected to be no more than 2 meters in height at their tallest.
Many of our teams in Nicaragua are already located inland. Still they have been advised to work with ministry hosts to monitor local advisories and respond accordingly if asked to evacuate. At current they are in no imminent danger.
There are a few teams located near the coast of Peru. Officials in Peru have not yet advised evacuation and do not expect waves currently traveling across the Pacific to present a serious threat. Still teams in Peru have also been advised to work with ministry hosts to monitor local advisories and respond accordingly if asked to evacuate. We have also asked them to communicate with ministry hosts to ensure that an evacuation plan is ready should local advisories change quickly.
The Logistics team has been in communication with teams across Asia, Australia, and the Americas to confirm that all parties are safe and to ensure that lines of communication will be open throughout the day.

India has been forever changed as the T squad of January racers have all safely arrived. A little jet-lagged, but a LOT excited they piled off the plane and into the nation of India.
They will spend the rest of the week in training and preparation for the next 11 months. Please pray for the Spirit to move in a fresh way. We are expecting a move of God in this country.
Thank you Lord for so many who have said "I will go, send me!"

This afternoon one of the July squad teams traveling in Malawi was involved in a car accident. We have been in touch with leadership on the ground in Malawi and are constantly monitoring the situation.
Tommy Sullivan has been transported to a hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi for further testing and evaluation and we would appreciate prayers for Tommy.
Others on Tommy's team walked away from the accident and outside of some scrapes and a possible broken arm they are doing well. Please pray as they are a little shaken up. They have all also been transported to a hospital in the capital city. (We have been in contact with all families of anyone involved.)
We are so grateful to our God who definitely had a hedge of protection around the racers today and are confident in His complete healing of everyone involved. Continued prayers are appreciated and we will update as the reports of healing come in.

Bangkok Thailand Update
While the situation in Bangkok in fact seem to have reached a pinnacle point in the standoff between protestors and Thai military forces we are still closely monitoring the situation. As anticipated we are now seeing that things are beginning to show hope for a peaceful resolution. Our risk assessment resources provide the following overview:
Leaders of the anti-government United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) surrendered to police and announced an end to their two-month long political rally today after government troops launched a security operation to clear the UDD's fortified protest camp in Thailand's capital, Bangkok. The operation follows six days of politically motivated violence in the central business district of the city, which has left at least 40 people dead and hundreds more injured since 13 May.
We are continuing to limit team traffic to the city at this time and will work with our local partners on the ground to insure that upcoming team travel to and from the Bangkok International Airport remain direct and uninterrupted.
Thank you for joining us in prayer over these past several weeks. Lets continue to pray for those involved and the country of Thailand.

The headlines continue to cover Bangkok, Thailand as the protestors and Thai military forces continue to prepare for what hopefully will be the resolution of this conflict.
Our risk assessment and local ministry contacts are recommending limited access and travel into Bangkok for the next couple days while this development reaches a peak. We have communicated with our teams and field leadership, in the country, to remain in the countryside locations until further notice. These are the safest and most secure locations for our teams currently to be.
While the conflict remains limited to a relatively isolated part of the capital city we want to make sure to exercise the a certain degree of safety and precaution. We are all anticipating that this level of needed precautions will quickly dissolve and become a rather non-issue in the very near future. The traffic in and out of Thailand by the primary international airport has not been interrupted and is not expected to be affected.
Please join us in an ongoing prayer for peace in Thailand.

We continue to exercise a heightened degree of awareness and alert when reviewing the ever developing situation in Bangkok, Thailand. The World Race currently has teams in Thailand but they are not located in and or around the areas of downtown Bangkok where protesters have fortified themselves in while Thai military forces begin more aggressive means to evict the protestors. We are in regular conversation with teams and field ministry partners to keep in a constant state of preparedness. At this point in time we continue to agree that teams are not in immediate danger and are as safe as possible. Our strategy will be to continue to keep teams away from downtown Bangkok and the capital's most volatile areas so as to insure the utmost safety as possible.
Amid the violence, the rest of the capital has remained largely normal with shops, restaurants and cinemas open and busy, albeit with customers and workers expressing concern about the clashes.
Thank you for your continued prayers for the Racers and the people of Thailand.

Update on Bangkok Thailand and Team Safety
It is important to start by saying that each World Race team is as safe and secure as possible. As the World Race staff and leadership we continue to monitor a series of protests and riot-like situations that have been taking place in the capital city of Bangkok. We utilize a variety of resources, including the US State Department, and a private international risk assessment organization to gather information about the state of security in the area. Our local contacts and resources also provide critical and timely information about the daily developments and how they may relate to our teams.
At this point in time the matter continues to be isolated and not in the immediate vicinity of our teams and ministry locations. In partnership with our senior ministry partners on the field we remain confident that all of our teams are not in a position of threat. The current conflicts are expected to coincide with the local holiday which ends on April 16. Our teams are already scheduled to make an exit from Bangkok and head out to their ministry locations in a timely fashion that will continue to insure their safety and security.
Thank you for your continued prayer for the teams and the nation of Thailand.
